Chapter
THIRTEEN
That didnât go well.
Damn. The voice inside his head had told Nick he should just keep his mouth shut.
But his heart said unless he was honest with her, sheâd never quite understand how much danger she was in, and Reign was not someone who worried about herself first.
Look at the situation: Her son, safely away on Long Island. Her sister, on her way to the Hamptons.
Look at her. In his bed.
âDo not go all Italian on me,â he said as calmly as possible as she sat up in a flurry of shining dark hair. âIâm very much interested in figuring this out. No one takes a hit out on someone else without some sort of profit on the other end. Itâs business or revenge. There are no other motives. So please tamp down that impulse you have to do me bodily damage and accept that Iâm not going to hurt you, but someone else wants to do so.â
âThatâs why you werenât at all concerned over Vince.â
She looked more beautiful than ever with fire in her green eyes.
âI knew firsthand it was you they were after, yes. Arenât you relieved? One is already dead, and Iâm not going to do it, so relax.â
âI ought to cut your balls off.â
âI could have never told you.â
âYou waited long enough.â
âReign, we are on the same side, right? Besides, I donât think your current ensemble of entirely naked could effectively hide a knife.â
That seemed to stop her, though she looked pretty delicious on her knees next to him, bare breasts quivering with each outraged breath. At any moment he could tumble her back over, but he respected her anger and the process it took for her to absorb the information.
To her credit, after a moment, she said quietly, âI get your point.â
âLetâs do this. You take my robe, and Iâll get us some wine, and we can sit on the terrace overlooking the city and talk about it. Iâm paying a lot of money for this place, so we should at least enjoy the view.â
âWhere did you get all this money? You have this place and that fabulous car ⦠blood money?â
âIf you want the truth,â he said mildly. âIt isnât what you think. I really am fairly good at the stock market. Learned it early on and invested wisely.â Nick walked, naked, to the closet, aware of her watching him. He took out a silk robe and turned to offer it. âDoes rich turn you off? If it does, you are not like any other woman Iâve met.â
Reign was ⦠well, Reign. She got up off the bed and took his robe, wrapping it around her. She looked him in the eye. âIâm not against rich, and Iâm not for it either. The man impresses me, not his money.â
âHow am I doing so far?â
âIâm still wavering on how to answer that.â
He picked up his discarded pants. âIâll open that wine since we seem to be in a semi-truce. Okay?â
âNothing sweet.â
âWouldnât dream of it. Do you have a preference?â
âMerlot.
